Today is the day my friends – reveal day! Just a quick recap on what all has been going on around here lately. I decided to take part in my first ever One Room Challenge, where bloggers makeover an entire room in their home in just six short weeks. For this first One Room Challenge I decided I would complete a home office makeover….or should I say turn my dining room into my home office! I decided to makeover my home office since it is a space I spend a lot of my time in and really wanted a more cozy home office than the one I currently have in a dark room on the second floor. I never use my dining room except on rare occasions so I decided to move my farm table into the kitchen area and start the home office transformation.

My inspiration for this space going into it was light, organized, and functional. I wanted the space to center around natural elements as well as a nice mixture of old versus new.

After I had all of the old dining room furniture moved out I was left with a pretty large empty space to fill. First thing I decided to tackle was the chandelier. Instead of spending money on a new one I decided to give the old silver chandelier a few coats of Annie Sloan Chalk paint and some dark wax to achieve sort of a restoration hardware look.

I loved the way it turned out so much that I decided I would use the chandelier as a starting point for my design and decor. I wanted to include a lot of white and grays into the decor to keep the rustic modern feel of the chandelier. I must say I am smitten with this chandelier! 😉

I knew that unlike my old office I wanted my desk to be the center & focal point of the room. When I moved my desk downstairs I realized it was a lot longer that what I was planning for, so I had to make some sacrifices in order for the room to not feel cluttered and tight. I ended up not using my Ikea Rast Chests. I do have a plan for these beauties, but unfortunately it doesn’t include the home office.

I wanted to make sure that the desk was free of clutter and seemed very minimalistic since my main goal for this home office was to have an organized & functional feel to it. A home office can quickly start to feel overwhelming with paper clutter and gadgets everywhere!

As you can tell in the pictures I don’t have anything on my vision/goal board. I ended up having some computer issues which put me a few days behind which is also why I am posting this a few days late! When I unplugged my computer to move it downstairs it wouldn’t turn back on. I was having a minor break down! It finally got fixed which made for one happy but semi-stressed gal trying to get this post up and out!

If I’m being honest the biggest struggle for me was the styling of the shelves. I had the pretty DIY Built-ins with nothing on the shelves. I knew how I wanted it to look, but achieving that look was a little harder than I expected. Shelf styling is one aspect of home decor that I do struggle with sometimes because I tend to overthink it. With this project I decided to stay pretty minimal with my shelf styling. I wanted my home office to be functional not just pretty so I kept that in mind when deciding what to do with the decor.

I wanted to mix up old and new so you will find some vintage pieces scattered in with the new pieces. Like this new concrete bird on top of an old vintage piece of china and moss.

Something about adding greenery to a space just makes me happy! I could have planted a garden in my old home office and it would still feel dark and dull. With all the light coming through the windows in this room the greenery really popped….and I love it! I picked up a few real boxwood wreaths and added them to my decor.

I also put a few boxwood wreaths on top of some of my vintage Ironstone plates to finish the look. I love layering pieces like these!

I had a nice mixture of old book finds with newer books to go with my old/new theme for the room. My plan is to add a few more vintage books as well as cover a few new books with linen and add some twine to give them a rustic look! I added an old truck book-end I found at an antique shop that I have been trying to find a place for. Seems to fit right at home here!

I didn’t have time to wrap some of my books so I just added some of my newer/bigger books to finish off the look for the mean-time until I get around to wrapping some books. My to-list keeps growing people!

After everything was put together I decided I needed some wall decor. I am sort of into this whole vintage map phase, so I was on the hunt for the perfect size and look for the biggest wall in the room. When I was shopping around the antique stores one day (spending too much money!) I came across this vintage map of the city of Paris….I snagged it up and thought it would be perfect! I must say….I’m in love!

Here are a few more shots of the shelving. I am loving the DIY Ikea built-ins. Even though it was a tough DIY project it was well worth it. I know my project ADD will come out and I will change the shelf decor out hundreds of times, but for now I am pleased and I think everything flows together very nicely!

Even though it was a little stressful, I loved participating in this challenge. It really kept me on track and on my toes.

The only thing that didn’t work out was the chair for the corner of the room. It was on backorder and then it was cancelled because they no longer sold it…I might have been close to shedding a tear or two! I have another chair for that space, but it needs some work before I am able to share it with you and hopefully I will be bringing you another fun DIY project with the chair.
